When creating a new SLC, we generally see that people tend to first relay it to friends or similarly-interested peers. In the case of Advanced Algorithms, we then sent out a survey to discern any additional interest. For continuation SLCs, like DSA, people interested in teaching or continuing to teach will also reach out and then determine who will be on the teaching team.

Because SLCs are, by nature, a student-guided endeavor, there isn’t any administrative centralization that currently exists. Students have the responsibility to fairly conduct any teaching team formation. For SLCs just starting out this is less of a concern, but the concern is larger for continuation SLCs. As much as possible, everybody interested in teaching the course should be taken into account, and a respectful procedure should be determined to make the final selection. One example of this is the formation of the 2021 teaching teams for AA and DSA - the students are bringing the interested students to CS faculty at Olin to make the final decision.
